The corvette Astrolabe was launched at Toulon in 1811 as a transport ship. She was later mounted with guns to serve as a fighting ship during the war of 1812. After 1822 she was transformed into an exploration ship and received her name after a famous French explorer. In her second voyage under the command of Captain Dumont d’Urville she discovered the continent of Antarctica.
